Teddy Donates 1.1m Br
Ethiopian singer-songwriter Tewodros Kassahun, a.k.a Teddy Afro, handed over more than 1.1 million Br to a local NGO, Elshadai Relief & Development Association on Friday October 29, 2009. The money was obtained from a concert the singer had performed at Addis Ababa Stadium on October 11, 2009 to help people with a life of begging.
In his first performance after being released early from his two-year sentence for good behavior, the 31-year-old singer had performed 25 songs for his fans who overflowed the stadium.
The frenzied mass forgot all their irritatation of waiting the moment Teddy entered the stadium. Fans were treated to the sight of Teddy paraded through the entrance of the stadium in the Hummer pickup of Awad Mohammed, owner of Adika car rental and one of the sponsors of the fund raising event. Teddy fully expected the evening to turn out the way it did, according to friends who talked to him. And he did not disappoint his fans as he gave the crowd an ecstatic time, performing 25 songs. Teddy was accompanied by his own Abugida band.
The association's Executive Director, Yemane Woldemariam, received a cheque of over 1.1 million Br at a brief press conference held at the Intercontinental Addis Hotel. Due to a tight schedule, Teddy requested the journalists not to raise questions.
